The Law Career Continues to Attract People Even After A Tough 2020. Will 2021 Be Better?
The legal industry globally has taken a significant hit with the Coronavirus pandemic but continues to show some resilience as job recruitment continues, according to international reports.
The jobs market in most jurisdictions has been moderately weak. In the US, for instance, the industry lost 68,000 jobs in April, but regains ground as 5,000 more attorneys, paralegals, legal secretaries and otherhe legal industry associated workers were hired in November, according to the latest Bureau of Labor Statistics jobs report.
In Australia, the UK, New Zealand and elsewhere law continues to be a popular career choice as many students see it as a secure job, even if it is not practising law itself.
According to the Institute of Student Employers in the UK, legal recruitment is down 4% since before Covid, but the average across graduate jobs is a 12% fall. Tristram Hooley, chief research officer, says legal vacancies for graduates are holding up. “If you’re already on that trajectory you are in a relatively good place. They are also currently offering a median starting salary of £38,250,” he says.
And so the law remains a good choice for anyone seeking a future as secure as any can be in these uncertain times.
