
How Lawyers Can Get Hired in The Booming Tech Sector
It's not just Big Law seeking lawyers - Big Tech is also looking out for lawyers as the tech sector continues to boom.
A recent article in Business Insider said that lawyers who are fighting burnout and just greener pastures are seeking well paid, challenging and interesting work in tech companies.
Tech companies are often perceived as being fast-paced and obviously will deal often with cutting edge developments, providing unique opportunities for lawyers seeking new challenges and perhaps a better work-life balance.
But the path to pivoting in-house isn’t straightforward. Insider spoke to 6 lawyers and legal recruiters to learn how to leverage Big Law experience to land a job in tech.
For instance, lawyers seeking to work in the tech sector can expect to take an (initial) pay cut. The perks will be there and there will also be the potential to achieve even equity in start-ups and the like which could lead to considerable wealth.
However, the change is one that the lawyer making the change needs to know about.
Similarly, some grounding in 'tech centric' legal areas like IP law is something that will help land a good job in the sector. Being able to provide skills that are needed or relevant are clearly important even though many tech firms may well take younger lawyers to 'grow their own' into the tech industry.
Also, be careful to choose the right sector and company that actually hold the potential for decent work quality and job prospects. Research the different fields to ensure you are looking at a job providing what you seek - good prospects, challenging legal work, work-life balance and so forth.
Making the pivot from private practice to a tech sector role requires some thinking and some research, but the rewards on multiple levels are there
